This weekend kicked off what will be a busy month of holiday parties. We will be attending everything from family friendly to adult only and I’m super excited to celebrate the season, in both formal and casual settings. In Maine we don’t get too many opportunities to dress up so I am really looking forward to it.
It’s no secret I’m having a love affair with velvet this season so it’s probably no surprise that I pulled out these red velvet jeans for my first gathering. They were such a fun pop of color and I felt very festive. I think when going for a bold look like this, it’s a good idea to keep everything else pretty simple. I paired them with a simple white top and minimal jewelry. (*As an aside, if you are petite, you can sometimes find great tops in the kids sections of J.Crew and Zara, for example, that are super cute and more reasonable that adult. I found this top in Zara kids and find their 13-14, if in the right shape, to be comparable to a 2 in adult. I have bought several tops in the kids section over the years!)
I have put together several other looks for inspiration for you in the coming weeks. This is a great time of year to push yourself a little with your wardrobe. Even if you normally consider yourself conservative, this is a great time to do something different. Wear sequins, sparkles, perhaps try a new shape, like a fuller skirt. It is such a fun time for dressing up and if you’ve been on the fence about a trend now is a perfect time to go for it! Below is sequin skirt that I would only pull out for the holidays – it’s such a fun and festive option for a dressier holiday party. Here is a similar skirt.
Most years I buy a few new pieces to coordinate with items I already have and most stores currently have great prices on festive tops and dresses. If you have a pair of black pants you love, consider adding a fun new top. I rediscovered Express last year around the holidays. They have a great selection of party tops at a very reasonable price. I have my eye on this one to wear with a pair of high waisted black pants.
I absolutely adore this green lace top from Anthropologie and while it looks like it is sold out online, there are several other beautiful lace and sparkly tops still in abundance.
No doubt I’ll find a reason to wear this ruffled sleeve velvet top as much as possible!
And don’t forget the always classic LBD. this one is perfect for that party where you know the food will be amazing. Ample room to go back for seconds in this fun and flirty swing dress. I love this one too!
Do you prefer dressy or casual parties and why?
