Age Appropriate and On Trend

The early spring trend predictions have all held strong this year and now that the weather is warming up across most of the country (hang on New Englanders our time is coming!) I feel like everywhere I look I see more and more of the ruffled, one-shouldered, cold-shouldered, off-the-shoulder tops and dresses I talked about a few months ago.

I know that when this trend was just starting last year I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off. I remember seeing this adorable picture of Jenna Bush Hager in an off the shoulder top on the cover of Southern Living.  I sent a group text to some of my closest friends (all 40 and up) asking them to weigh in on whether we are too old for the this bare shoulder trend. I’d say at that time most of thought maybe we were, or at least we probably wouldn’t be making a purchase for our wardrobe.

However, a year later, I feel like this trend has totally exploded and isn’t going anywhere soon. And that’s good news because now retailers are providing really cute and age appropriate options for all of us! And as much as I cringe every time I post a picture of myself, I’m sharing a few options I have found that are cute, affordable and appropriate for my age and place in life. (I’m sooooo not a model, so forgive my fumbling as I share some of these looks shot at the end of the day, while we chased the light. I just want you to see that these looks do work on normal, real life folks!)

This one shouldered dress is incredibly flattering in its shift like shape
Notice how the cut is incredibly modest and the length of the dress is also appropriate.
My shoes are old. Similar shoes from the same budget brand linked here
The top has very strong elastic so there was no movement at all (key in an off the shoulder look!)
Similar Antelope shoes here.
I love the bow details on this off the shoulder top
This top paired great with white jeans but would also work with a dark denim.
Still crazy about these OTBT shoes!

LOFT is one of my favorite places to shop and I found all of these pieces there on major sale. (I will say that I tend to size down in this brand, and buy from their petite line so if you are not a frequent LOFT shopper, be sure to try on multiple sizes.)

I love that I can feel confident that most pieces in their store will be well made, well priced (especially if you wait for their sales, which I always do!) and age appropriate.  Let me know how you are incorporating this bare shouldered trend into your wardrobe. And if you are looking for help finding the right pieces, drop me a note, I’d be thrilled to help you out!
